This workstream covers literacy, numeracy and maths and 1+2 language development from early years right through to the senior phase. Through this workstream we are working to develop curriculum-specific supports and career-long professional learning opportunities, both for Class Teachers and Head Teachers. Sharing best practice that helps young people develop skills for learning life and work as well as developing digital approaches to curriculum delivery are central to this.
The ability to communicate effectively in social, academic and commercial settings is crucial if young people are to play their part as global citizens in an ever-evolving world. This applies to numeracy and literacy as well as modern languages. Those involved in this workstream are working to improve learning, teaching and assessment practice across all curricular areas by supporting self-improvement and self-evaluation, creating opportunities to share best practice, focusing on a pedagogy-based approach and looking at learning pathways.
The Northern Alliance Early Years Network is focusing on what we can do collaboratively to sustain and improve the quality of Early Learning and Child Care across the Northern Alliance in preparation for the 1140 Hours Expansion. The network has agreed to focus on four key themes within ‘Quality of ELC’:
- Building knowledge and understanding of Early Level Curriculum design
- Building an Excellence and Equity Lead Network
- Using digital technology to learn and collaborate
- Evaluation of Northern Alliance Emerging Literacy
Please have a look at the Whole School Literacy Toolkit which is available on the Highland Literacy website if you are interested in this area of work. This was developed in part by the Northern Alliance team.
