The Northern Alliance Raising Attainment in Literacy, Language and Communication report from July 2017 detailed the positive impact on practitioners and outcomes for children through their collaboration in taking a developmental approach to emerging literacy.

Based on the emerging literacy approach, originally developed in Highland Council, the seven Local Authorities within the Northern Alliance have worked collaboratively to scale the work across the north of Scotland, building collaboration within and between local authorities and health boards.

The research informed practice of Emerging Literacy was developed in partnership between education, educational psychology and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) across Highland Council. The regional collaboration across the Northern Alliance has allowed for these partnerships to advance, blurring the boundaries between education and health to improve outcomes for children.
